Subway linking Micklefield to Marsh

Residents, volunteers and local artists all
come together for the M&M legacy project

Is it a subway? Is it an underpass? Is it a walkway? Is it a passage?

NO it’s a drop down in shock, great reflection of the very best of Marsh and Micklefield, set of murals, on the walls of the subway that links Wycombe Marsh to Micklefield, (or Micklefield to Wycombe Marsh depending on which direction you are coming from.

As the Marsh & Micklefield Big Local project drew towards its end in 2025, the volunteer resident led team turned its attention to what legacy projects we could undertake that would be a permanent reminder of the ten years of the Big Local project and improving this well used subway seemed an obvious choice.

Improvements to this area had been discussed many times over the years, (including by the Marsh & Micklefield Big Local team), with discussions around what could be done with the rather untidy, drab, uninteresting walkway. Many complained about it, some said they feared walking through it, some swept it, some pledged to improve it, but at the end of the day it was the hard work and commitment of local residents along with the skill and talent of Dan and his team https://www.instagram.com/decreateuk who made it happen.

Much as we would have liked, we couldn’t just get Dan and team to start painting, we had to seek permission from Buckinghamshire Council and pay for a license to work in the area, however rules are rules and we were happy to meet with the Council’s Local Area Technician on site to explain the vision along with the how and when.

The Community Payback team helped Dan with the clearing of brambles and overgrown bushes around the entrances to the subway and along with local volunteers began clearing old flaking paint from the walls before repainting began.

Initially it didn’t look like that much of a task, however this turned out to be not just one mural, but a number of panels celebrating the place and people of Wycombe Marsh and Micklefield. With contributions from Ash Hill School, Beechview Academy, Marsh Infants School and residents, as it progressed, the work became of real interest to those using the subway and, based on feedback we have had, will be a real talking point not just locally, but across High Wycombe and beyond.

We would like to thank Dan and his brilliant team for their preparation, hard work and amazing artistic skills.

Our agreement with Dan

We know there have been concerns of upkeep but that’s not an aspect we haven’t considered. Dan will repaint over any graffiti or unwanted art for a period of three years after the work in completed. We sincerely hope that everyone will respect the time, effort and skill that has gone into the murals and be proud of what has been achieved.
