Men in Sheds

Is Men in Sheds the best kept secret in High Wycombe?

A brief history lesson…

The Men’s Sheds movement officially began in the 1980s in Australia and inspired by its success Sheds started appearing in other countries and in the UK from 2011. There is a now a network of Sheds across the UK with the aim of improving wellbeing, reducing loneliness and combatting social isolation. We are fortunate that the High Wycombe Shed is based right here, in Marsh & Micklefield at Kingsmead next to the Chiltern Rangers depot.

Joining a Men’s Shed group is all about connection, conversation and creation and a place where people are encouraged to come together to make, repair and repurpose, and support projects in their local communities.

What are Men in Sheds?

Men’s Sheds (or Sheds) are similar to garden sheds – a place to pursue practical interests, practice skills, share experience, make and mend. Whilst garden sheds tend to be solitary activities, Sheds are the opposite as they are about social connections, friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, and also a lot of fun and laughter.

Sheds are whatever the members want them to be and although labelled sheds they can be empty offices, porta-cabins, warehouses, garages, and in the case of High Wycombe, an old sports changing room at Kingsmead.

Please don’t be put off by the name!

The High Wycombe Shed is a community space for people to connect, talk and create; they welcome women members and aim to create an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for everyone whatever their background and experience. You must be aged 18 or over to join the Shed but other than that everyone is welcome to pop in, have a cup of tea and find out all about the Shed.

The essence of the High Wycombe Shed is not a building, but the connections and relationships between its members.

The High Wycombe Shed has woodworking and carpentry tools and equipment, but members decide what activities or interests they pursue, and everyone is encouraged and supported to share their skills and experience with other members.

The High Wycombe Shed is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week from 10 am until 3pm but as a member, you don’t need to be always ‘doing stuff’, you can go to the Shed just to chat and have a cuppa and catch up with your fellow Shedders.
