Allotment Tea Party
The sun bursting from behind the clouds on Thursday morning was a wonderful welcome for our Autumn Tea party guests. For this year's International day of Older Persons, we were supported by Heart of Bucks to host an English Country Garden event at our community allotment.
‘ I can't believe I used to live in Wycombe Marsh and never knew this was here.’
Even though it was the 1st of October we had splendid weather, the birds were out singing, bees hovered above the flowers and the salad leaves quivered in the gentle breeze, an idyllic setting for a great get together.
So, why as an organisation is it so important for us to celebrate this day in particular?
Firstly, our amazing volunteers are made up from those who donate their time once or twice a week to support our wonderful space. It's not always easy to be motivated in the heat or drizzle, but the team are amazing and we couldn't do what we do without them.
Secondly, being outside in nature is a gift that is sometimes taken for granted. The health benefits from being active through pruning fruit trees, stretching over to harvest juicy tomatoes or watering the beds are evident. But also, the comradery, the laughter and the tasty, shared meals, where people who were once strangers become friends.
Doing their bit by supporting local green spaces, donating produce to food banks and sharing their passion for growing food with others.
‘ More people need to know about the free opportunities like this in Wycombe, it's been wonderful for my mental health and keeps me busy and active.’
The event celebrated the joy that can be found in nature, sharing knowledge about growing plants, and recipes that have been tried and tested. Nothing beats the enjoyment found in such a welcoming and calming space, a sanctuary for many.
Teas were brewed, homemade fruit juices sampled, cakes were eaten and everyone left with smiles on their faces. Some joyfully carried pots of thyme to take back to their homes. ‘We're enjoying the thyme we have left!’ joked one visitor. Followed by many other time-based jokes. It was a great opportunity to bring new and familiar faces together to get outside, experience something different and enjoy each other's company.
Open allotment sessions take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays 9:30- 12:30, all are welcome to pop along and see what happens.
